Camp Alkulana is rolling out plans to operate safely this summer! While we are so proud of the innovative programs we ran last summer in Richmond, we are all hungry for a return to our campgrounds in Bath County and our typical overnight summer camp program. A team of dedicated summer camp staff and volunteers is working diligently to create an operations plan that is congruent with CDC and American Camp Association protocols. While we know COVID-19 will still be in our lives this summer, we are hopeful that by June we can safely operate our camp with strategies like cohorts, masks, and loads of outdoor activities.
Here’s why we think opening this summer is important: Children are experiencing untold amounts of stress right now as they navigate a disrupted school year, limited extracurricular activities, and restrictive social lives. All of these stressors have impacted mental health in children and youth in a big way. We believe that time with friends in the outdoors could be the antidote for this stress. Camp Alkulana has been providing this kind of get-away-from-it-all service for our campers for over 100 years, and we are eager to do so again. So here’s to another summer of running, and laughing, and playing by the creek in that little hollow we love. Here’s to counselors spending their summer ministering to campers and learning about their own callings in the midst of it. And here’s to a summer of God moving in all of our lives as we bear witness to this good work.
