Celebrating Women at Alkulana
In celebration of Women’s History Month, let’s honor the women who founded, grew, and sustained Camp Alkulana in its over 100 year history. Camp Alkulana was started by a group of mission-minded women in the early days of the camping industry, and local Woman’s Missionary Union groups continue to bolster support for Camp Alkulana to this day. In the beginning, Camp Alkulana only served female campers and was led by female camp counselors. Women served as nurses and cooks at the camp, and back home they made sure their churches (and husbands!) were contributing financially to the work. Its founders’ deepest hope was to invest in the lives of Richmond’s future women. Over the last 107 years, seven women have led the camp as camp directors, and countless other women…
Here’s to Summer 2021!
Camp Alkulana is rolling out plans to operate safely this summer! While we are so proud of the innovative programs we ran last summer in Richmond, we are all hungry for a return to our campgrounds in Bath County and our typical overnight summer camp program. A team of dedicated summer camp staff and volunteers is working diligently to create an operations plan that is congruent with CDC and American Camp Association protocols. While we know COVID-19 will still be in our lives this summer, we are hopeful that by June we can safely operate our camp with strategies like cohorts, masks, and loads of outdoor activities. Here’s why we think opening this summer is important: Children are experiencing untold amounts of stress right now as they navigate a disrupted…
Taken by Force
When I first went to Camp Alkulana it was by force. My parents had decided that I would be going, and even though I asked them not to they sent me anyway. That summer I had been questioning my faith and my place in the world and I thought being away from home would make it worse. I turned out to be wrong. Through my week at camp of hiking and caving and Bible study, I talked to counselors about life and God and anything else I had questions about. They gave me answers to everything, or at least tried their best to. An experience that really changed my view of the world was hiking up a nearby hill and standing at a beautiful overlook that had been a place…
Where Difference Breeds Friendship
When I first attended Camp Alkulana as a camper in 2008, I really didn’t know what to expect. As a rather shy and bookish child, I was delighted to have a chance to explore the outdoors with a close friend of mine. However, I had no idea about what to expect concerning my fellow campers. Through elementary school, I had always been drawn more towards people who looked like me and came from the same sort of backgrounds as I did, with a few exceptions. At camp, I was encouraged to do the opposite of what I was used to. Befriending several individuals, I found my confidence boosted, helping me enjoy this new situation. Camp Alkulana taught me that all individuals are different, but looking differently than someone does not…
